Sales and Use Tax Rate Increase
Due to voter approval of Proposition 30, the statewide sales and use tax rate will increase one quarter of one percent (0.25%) on January 1, 2013. The higher tax rate will apply for four years — January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2016.
For online internet merchants, now is a good time to double-check the tax settings on your e-commerce cart. Make sure all California residents are being charged the appropriate percentage as posted on the Board of Equalization’s website. Non-California residents are not required to pay sales tax unless your business has a physical location in their state.
