Google is constantly adding new services in an attempt to compete with emerging technologies, and social networking is no exception. Now, the search engine giant is rolling out Google+1 (also known as Google Plus), which aims to give the most significant social networking tool for businesses – the Facebook “Like” button – a serious run for it’s money. If you haven’t yet tried Google Plus, now may be the time to do so.

What’s it all about? Google+1, which launched as an experiment in March and continues to operate on a trial basis, is a social network that allows users to share general information with those they have added to that network (think in terms of “friends” or “followers”). How can it benefit your business? Google Plus allows users to click the +1 button associated with the search results and ads that they favor, much like the Facebook “Like” button. If Google+1 takes off (and it probably will), that could mean serious visibility for businesses that receive those clicks. Since Google is the #1 name in search, businesses that receive recognition from Google Plus users are very likely to see their search engine results improve.

Don’t take my word for it, though; hear what Google spokesperson Matt Cutts had to say. He described the +1 feature as “…a potential signal to improve search quality…I find social search extremely useful, especially with the recent updates. This change continues the evolution of social search, and it’s a natural progression to improve the search experience.”

To participate in the Google Plus experiment, follow these steps:

  • Sign into your Google Account (required)
  • Click “Join this experiment”
  • Search for anything you want on Google search
  • Click the +1 button to make your mark on the Web

Yes, this is the same social networking recommendation process that Google has used for the past few years, and that Facebook has had great success with already. But now, it can give the organic search engine rankings of businesses like yours a real advantage over the competition.
