Internet Marketing

1-800-Flowers.com has become one of the first e-tailers to open a storefront on the social media monster Facebook. Now any Facebook user can browse and purchase from 1-800-Flowers Facebook page and if you become a “fan” of the page you receive secret discount codes. All of this allows Facebook users to do all of their flower shopping without leaving Facebook.

Social media marketing has become an affordable alternative to traditional online advertising in a recession. Many other brands such as Pizza Hut, Target, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Starbucks have advertised and promoted themselves on Facebook, but 1-800-Flowers.com is the first to fully integrate an e-commerce storefront. “We’re seeing brands do more and more interesting things with their Facebook Pages”, Facebook said in an e-mail sent to InternetNews.com. “1-800-Flowers’ online store is a great example of a business trying new things. Facebook Pages can be a unique and interactive way for businesses to communicate and engage with consumers.”

Prior to adding the fan page and all the benefits that follow, 1-800-Flowers.com launched a Facebook app that worked with its rewards program, by offering users activities they could participate in to earn special discounts and benefits. This shows that even in 2007, 1-800-Flowers was ahead of the game in transforming their Facebook page into an e-commerce hub. Only time will tell if they can convert their Facebook fans into buyers.
